Everyone out there who has a dog with a hepatic disease (liver disease) knows how difficult it is to source healthy, great tasting treats.  What do you do when your dog is only allowed low ammonia producing proteins, may need foods with low amounts of copper, you may have to worry about sodium intake (salt intake) and the poor guy is begging for a piece of liver?  "Sorry buddy" doesn't work!  Whether your dog has been diagnosed with liver disease, chronic active hepatitis, other forms of hepatitis or one of the myriad of other liver diseases out there, we have some solutions to keep your dog happy and wagging his tail!

When choosing treats for your dog with liver disease, please remember that everything is relative. How restrictive your dog's diet must be will depend entirely on how well the liver is working.  K9 Raw Diet strongly encourages active conversation with your veterinarian or canine nutritionist when it comes to choosing both food and treats for your pet.  In general, eggs, dairy and white fish will have the lowest ammonia output.  Poultry will have lower ammonia output than red meats. And foods higher in copper would include lamb, pork, duck, salmon, liver, pheasant, quail and avocados, just to name a few.  But again, speak to your health care professional when choosing foods and treats for your dog.  Just because he has a medical condition doesn't mean we can't indulge them in yummy treats!
