By choosing foods from this category, you're pretty much assured that your dog isn't missing anything. There are many good reasons why one would want to feed raw food that has been formulated to meet the nutritional level of AAFCO for all life stages: sometimes our allergy dogs are very limited as to which proteins they can tolerate so we want a little extra "insurance" in the diet. Sometimes our dogs become fixated on certain proteins and refuse all others so again, we want that "insurance." Sometimes we are crazy busy and don't have time to figure out a prey model type of diet. And sometimes when we are new to feeding a raw diet for dogs (or cats) we want to start the easiest way possible until we feel more comfortable adding other foods.

What's AAFCO by the way AAFCO is the Association of American Feed Control Officials. Basically, they're the guys who have the last word when it comes to the minimum nutrients relative to what goes into pet food. When you hear the phrase "complete and balanced," think AAFCO.
